With the FLEXO Press technology we have, it’s become more practical and a better way of marketing if you provide your target clients with marketing guarantee printed efficiently. From label printing, sticker printing and custom labels, printing is a most important and essential part of marketing that any business can’t do without.

That’s reason commercial printing has become very fashionable. Many have ventured into the printing business that sometimes it’s not so hard to get an unreliable provider that’s only in for the money. With the big demand for commercial printing, it’s not surprising at all that many would want to try their hands on this particular niche.

But if you’re on the other side and you’re the one needing this particular printing service, how can you be sure that the commercial printer you send out your best print job to would give you the results you expect from their side? One way is you have the basics knowledge of commercial printing. You need to know the bare necessities so you can ask the right questions when you’re ready to bring your print requirements to your printing provider.

Choose material for your product labels

Paper product labels best for food labels or for other short-term uses and may be laminated to protect the ink. Film product labels are good for packages that get wet, like shampoo, etc. Product label helps to find out your product easy way. You can also find your label stamped with gold or silver foil for a fancy look of color with many types of label material.

So what do you need to know?

The first things you have to understand are the words associated with commercial printing. These are the jargons such as RGB and CMYK when doing your sticker printing, label printing and custom labels for example. Both are associated with colors and inks that are applied in your printing job.

RGB are for the colors red, green and blue which are used to print the primary colors in commercial printing. By the way, these colors are considered the major colors in commercial printing hence, they tend to be less costly than any other color combinations. On the other hand, CMYK are cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Black represents the letter ‘k’ as it stands for ‘key’, which means the key color in printing – black being the key color. Newer digital label printers are skilled of mixing seven colors for a truer color. Another way, asks for a printed proof of your product label before paying for a full print run. Ask if you can run a small batch so that you can see any color variation that is bound to happen. The variation shouldn’t be bad – just a shade lighter or darker is normal.

These are some of the basic terms for your commercial printer when you hiring a commercial printer to do the job for you. You need to know these basic fundaments for you to be able to ask the right questions that can give you the best results for your print job or business needs.

Print Isn’t Dead!

Print Isn’t Dead!

Don’t believe what you read. Printing’s not dead.

By Joseph Gornail

My story is about preserving the craft of printing in Manhattan, especially downtown where the industry was most successful and has an unparalleled historical significance.

I’m a native downtown kid, born and raised on Thompson & Grand streets with family that has printing roots tracing back to Printing-House Square.

My grandfather worked as a binder for many years. He always loved and appreciated a well-printed product, whether it was personal stationery or a cereal box. He would always break down the process that was involved to create the effect of raised paper, raised ink, shiny letters, etc.

I remember many Sunday afternoons walking down to Park Row with my grandfather to go and see the statue of Benjamin Franklin (which was dedicated to all of the New York City printers) he was extremely proud that a man of such success and achievement was a lifelong printer.

He passed his passion for printing on to me and I have been obsessed ever since. I started my own company in 2004 and had immediate success with a Nike project being the first thing we produced under the name Fine Print. My mission statement from the beginning is still today’s number one priority, “To preserve the craft of printing and always maintain a commitment to excellence.”

Landing Nike as the first project was a sign to me and since then I have dedicated my life to educating myself with everything related to printing. I even created a Web site www.fineprintschool.com that is all about learning the craft of printing and graphic design.

Regardless of how much technological progress we have in the industry, nothing can or will replace the feeling of holding a printed piece with the effect of letterpress, embossing, foil stamping or seeing a CMYK printed project with a design that uses color in a way that is purely art.

When I was growing up, Hudson & Varick Streets became the new “Printing-House Square” and many creative agencies soon followed. Printing was such an integral part of the neighborhood; Chelsea Vocational, the local public high school started teaching and training the next generation of printers.

My uncle was a student and went on to have a great career as a pressman, working for over 20 years in 250 Hudson. I remember he would always bring home fancy paper for us to color and draw on. He often said how lucky he felt to be working with his childhood friends and would look forward to hanging out with them every Friday at “Nino’s” or “The Three Roses.”

Nowadays things are a bit different—90 percent of all printing companies have been pushed out of neighborhoods and commercial buildings they occupied for many decades, due to non-lease renewal or raising rent that was unfair and unaffordable.

I want to re-establish and promote a community that encouraged friendship between competitors, shared resources and would often collaborate on projects.

I have partnered with two printing companies that share the same passion for the craft as I do and have refused to leave downtown. Together we produce some amazing work that is seen all over the world. We also make sure to work and give discounts to local small businesses, students and not for profits, this is mandatory for our overall success.

I, and various other printers, embrace digital technology, but work tirelessly to preserve traditional offset and specialty printing. If you think about it, pretty much everything we use in our daily lives has some type of printing process applied.

And while the printing industry is definitely in a transitional state that will continue to change, the true print craftsman will always have a place in the creative process.
